Urine Test Methodology

Urine testing may include a two-part process—screening and confirmation. Initial screening is generally performed via immunoassay, a technique commonly used for analyzing drugs or drug classes in biological samples. If the specimen initially tests positive, a confirmation test may be performed before the laboratory reports the result.

If confirmation is ordered, we confirm the presence of drugs using analytical methods that combine chromatographic separation with mass spectrometric identification. These types of methods include gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS or GC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS or LC-MS/MS). These confirmation tests can identify compounds by their retention times and molecular structure and are recognized by courts and scientists as the definitive methods to identify and quantity drugs.
